Role summary:

The Insurance Manager is responsible for managing the insurance operations, including programme design and placement, liaison with in-house Claims teams, service delivery and technical standards. This role involves ensuring compliance with industry regulations and optimising the company's insurance portfolio.


The successful candidate will work alongside the Director of Insurance and Claims in the cost-effective management of all UK insurance programmes and placement of insurance protection in line with Risk policy and ensure that business divisions receive a timely and supportive service on all insurance matters. The Director of Insurance & Claims or business divisions within the Group will require for the Insurance Manager to participate in specific insurance and claims related projects and will be expected to support on all other Group insurance matters.


Acting with integrity, they will role model First Bus values and behaviours (‘Our Way') in all interactions, and through effective leadership and stakeholder management, they will ensure the needs of local authorities, investors, customers, partners, and colleagues are met.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop solutions for the existing and changing insurance needs of the business divisions and Group - including programme design and placement
  • Control the development of annual insurance budget and monitor performance against agreed level
  • Provide insurance and risk insight for bids and other growth opportunities, contributing to the business case, and integrate successful acquisitions into the wider programme
  • Work closely with Rail and Bus operating companies to obtain all required annual insurance information, to agreed deadlines. Investigate and explain major year on year variances in compliance with the requirements of the Insurance Act. Evaluate and collate risk exposure information for disclosure to insurers
  • Act as a point of contact for insurance related questions from business divisions and ensure that accurate and timely responses are provided.
  • Lead or participate in specific insurance and claims related projects as directed by the DI or required by business divisions.
  • Contribute towards the development of the Insurance strategy, taking ownership of specific aspects
  • Recommend and oversee appropriate method for allocation of premiums across UK divisions (and Group where required)
  • Develop and maintain effective relations with business divisions and central functions (including property, safety, security, IT, legal), to ensure their awareness of the insurance programme and any matters requiring attention.
  • Assist in managing and developing broker and other supplier relationships and ensure best value from contracts
  • Ensure that all relevant certificates and other documentation are correctly circulated immediately post renewal and manage supplier queries related to FirstGroup Insurances
  • Maintain a complete electronic library of all insurance policies and related documentation, including historical policies for as many years as possible.
  • Assist in managing the risk survey programme undertaken by insurers and ensure that recommendations are duly followed up by locations.
  • Maintain, develop, and update the Insurance page on the Group Intranet/Share point.
  • Meet regularly with UK brokers to discuss outstanding insurance matters affecting the Group.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to benefit efficiency and effectiveness
  • Working with ID and the brokers to ensure as many actions on the rolling WIP list are actioned and closed out.
  • Monitor industry practice for development opportunities within Group and Divisions
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of FirstGroup plc's Business Structure, Strategy, Performance etc.
  • Keep up to date with changes in the insurance market and with any legal/technical developments that impact the Group's insurance programmes.


Skills, Experience and Behaviours required

Skills/Experience

  • At least 10 years' experience working within the insurance industry, preferably in the transport sector.
  • Technical insurance qualification, preferably ACII, or willingness to work towards (the company will pay required costs).
  • Experience of reviewing contracts for indemnity and insurance requirements and advising on alternative options
  • Knowledge of claims handling across General insurance lines is an advantage
  • Experience in leading people
  • Proficient in the development and presentation of detailed business cases
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a logical and methodical financial approach
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, capable of engaging, challenging, negotiating, and influencing at all levels
  • Confident and capable in facilitating workshops and delivering strategic presentations and plans to colleagues at a senior level
  • Experienced in driving performance and team spirit, used to managing conflicting priorities with multiple functions and able to co-operatively find solutions
  • Proven track record of persuading others to embrace new ways of operating and thinking about the business
  • Able and willing to operate at both an operational and strategic level
  • Exceptional organisation and time management skills, with a high level of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritise and work under pressure / to tight deadlines.
  • Able to operate with complete discretion given the role will be one with significant access to confidential and commercial information.
  • Commercially astute, emotionally intelligent; and an effective networker and communicator with the ability to quickly forge strong working relationships at all levels and build trust
