4basebio is an innovative gene synthesis company with the ambition to provide high quality, synthetic DNA for use in gene therapies and gene vaccines. We are expanding our teams at our premises just North of Cambridge, UK. We are looking for an experienced Safety Officer who is comfortable acting as the responsible person to ensure the company’s compliance with GMO/H&S legislation.


Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the company’s compliance with relevant legislation including the Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations 2014 ('the GMO(CU) Regulations'), Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, etc
  • Be the main point of contact with the HSE and other H&S bodies/representatives, ensuring all required documentation is in place and filed in a timely manner
  • Carry out risk assessments for GMO, H&S and Fire Safety, and action where additional measures may be required
  • Adopt safe practices in activities involving biological material and assess the competence of persons to work safely
  • Ensure all staff are adequately trained in H&S, especially new starters or staff who’s job role has significantly changed
  • Investigate and record any accidents or incidents in liaison with the Lab Manager and/or the HR Manager taking appropriate action where needed
  • Take on any other H&S responsibilities that reasonable fall within the job holders remit and capabilities


Person Specification:

  • A good understanding of COSHH Regulations and the legal framework surrounding use of biological materials (e.g. GMO (Contained Use) regulations, SAPO, ACDP guidance etc.)
  • Experience in managing the health, safety and welfare of staff over a multi-site environment
  • Experience working in laboratory environments is essential
  • Experience of working in cleanrooms and/or manufacturing environments is desirable
  • Comfortable working autonomously or collaboratively
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Willing to travel between sites
  • Must hold the right to work in the UK
