The post-holder will be responsible for the development and maintenance and implementation of a unified Pathology Quality Management System which meets the standards set by UKAS and provide expert advice, support and leadership in quality management issues throughout Pathology and in other parts of the Trust as agreed with management. Key working relationships include:

- Pathology Manager / ACW ICSU Director of Operations
- ACW ICSU Clinical Director
- Consultants in Pathology
- Pathology Service Managers
- Pathology staff with quality management responsibilities
- Heads of other departments
- Laboratory users
- Quality managers in other organisations
- External agencies

Medical services have been delivered on the Whittington Hospital site for over 500 years. On 1st April 2011, Whittington Health was launched as a new Integrated Care Organisation (ICO) comprising The Whittington Hospital NHS Trust, NHS Islington and NHS Haringey. The Whittington and the community health services in Islington and Haringey are award winning organisations, delivering acute and community based health services to a population of 443,000 people.

The organisation is the biggest employer in the area, with over 4,500 staff; delivering healthcare not only on the acute hospital site which has 420 beds, but also from a variety of other community based health centres and through visits to patients homes across the boroughs to address the health needs of the local population. Whittington Health also works with other health, social care and voluntary sector partners to support patients and service users from their initial appointment whether it be with a community health team or at the hospital, all the way through to treatment and tailored after care.

To be the professional lead in pathology laboratory quality issues, to ensure a highly specialist service that contributes to the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients is delivered.
1. To have overall responsibility for preparing and implementing the pathology quality policy to ensure pathology retains full accreditation with UKAS.
2. To coordinate, maintain and manage a quality management system for Pathology in accordance with National, Trust and ISO standards and guidance.
3. To arrange the management review meetings.
4. In conjunction with the Service Managers, to produce quality plans and objectives to meet the changing needs of the pathology environment.
5. To ensure that robust document control procedures are in place and followed.
6. To manages the format and distribution of standard operating procedures for the services via the quality management system.
7. To develop, manage and supervise a system of internal audit against defined quality performance measures throughout Pathology and to ensure that effective and immediate action is taken to resolve any issues identified.
8. To liaise with Service Managers to ensure that the quality standards defined by UKAS are maintained.
9. To ensures recommendations from external assessments are actioned and to verify the completion of corrective actions as outlined in the reports from appropriate assessment bodies
10. To manage and organise external assessment visits to ensure that facilities comply with the needs of the visiting assessors
11. To define, implement and monitor standards of performance and quality improvement of the medical laboratory service or services.
12. To provide quality performance indicator information for the Pathology Quality Dashboard and monitoring, reviewing and reporting on variances in performance. Implement strategies in conjunction with Pathology Manager / Director of Operations and resolve any deficiencies to meet the objectives of Pathology and the Trust.
13. To advise and support the Service Managers where appropriate, to ensure policies are in place for all aspects of quality including quality control and quality assurance.
