INTERNAL VACANCY
We're looking for a dynamic, super-organised communications and engagement specialist to join our team.
The successful candidate will be able to make people part of our strategies to deliver key objectives for some of York's major projects.
These include plans to reimagine York's streets and create healthier places, helping make York an even better place to be.
The role includes developing and delivering a communications and engagement plan to take a strategic approach to identifying and engaging the diverse communities across York.
Listening and learning from the people of our city is a vital part of the success of these projects.
You'll work with a wide range of project partners to ensure communications and engagement activities are consistent, coordinated and efficiently delivered.
You'll need to know how to target and grab the attention of the right audiences with the right content, in order to share important information or to inspire action.
Your bright ideas and energy will mean
you can learn fast, work accurately and to multiple deadlines.
Working with teams across the council and partners across the city, we know that you'll love the interest and pace.
You'll be part of a busy and supportive team which will encourage and further your can-do attitude and your flair for comms.
You'll build on our strong relationships with other organisations to maximise the reach and impact of our messaging. The role includes organising and running face to face engagement sessions – including analysis of feedback- and supporting other engagement events such as workshops, drop-ins and ward meetings.
We expect a high level of written English and we'd like applicants to have relevant experience in communications, editorial or marketing, preferably with experience of creating video and photography too.
This post is deemed as politically restricted. As designated politically restricted officers, employees will not be allowed to undertake certain activities. Please refer to the guidance attached for further information.
As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express themselves spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.
Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive health and wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous learning and development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.
For further information or an informal discussion please contact Andrew Harrison, Senior Communications Manager at or on
Closing date: 16 October 2025 at 12 midnight
Interview date: 29 October 2025
Internally advertised posts are only open to CYC, WWY and Be Independent employees. Explore and Veritau employees are not eligible to apply for these posts.
