Job Description

It’s no secret that it’s been a challenging year for the charity and non-profit sector. Funding is down, resources are tight and yet the services offered by charitable organisations are more needed than ever before. With this in mind, it’s quite clear that the person or team responsible for the financial control and governance of these organisations are the linchpin for stability and growth.


Based in Croydon, the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC) is a specialist sexual violence centre providing an exceptional standard of therapeutic support for women and girls who have experienced rape and/or childhood sexual abuse. The organisation is a provider of vital services to those who have often experienced immense trauma and it’s imperative that their work is able to continue as efficiently and effectively as possible.


Having recently appointed a new CEO, Interim Director of Operations and Interim Director of People, the leadership team are looking for a Director of Finance to join the team and drive the charity to the next phase of growth. Due to the nature of the role, it is essential that the Director of Finance is a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) and has significant experience working in a financial leadership role within a charity or non-profit organisation.


This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week on a hybrid basis (Croydon 3 days/home 2 days), paying £70k, as well as pension and a benefits package including life assurance, healthcare plan and Employee Assistance Programme.


Some areas you’ll be involved in include:


  • Strategic Financial Management : Work closely with the CEO, Interim Director of Operations and Interim Director of People to develop a strategic financial framework to support the development of the Charity, ensuring its financial sustainability and growth over the next 5 years.


  • Statutory Reporting : Take the strategic responsibility for the completion of year-end statutory financial accounts and annual reports, ensuring they represent a true and fair view, including responsibility for the submission to the Charity Commission and other regulatory authorities.


  • Operational Financial Management : Influence and develop the Charity’s annual financial cycle. This will include overseeing the budget-setting process, the forward financial plan, capital, cash and balance sheet planning and the annual closedown of accounts.


  • Financial Control & Governance : Ensure that major capital bids, research investments and funding applications are financially robust and closely monitor the implementation ensuring projects are managed and regulated in line with the Charity’s approvals and funding agreements.


  • Accounting & Audit : Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, guidance and manuals and provide appropriate advice to The Charity Board of Trustees and others on accounting issues, taking responsibility for the production of The Charity’s Annual Accounts and ensuring on all financial aspects of the Annual Report are produced to a high quality and submitted on time.


  • Policies & Procedures : Work with the Interim Director of People to establish effective payroll, TOIL and expense policies, as well as be responsible for the development of all necessary financial policies and procedures.


  • Financial Growth : Working with the Chief Executive Officer to deliver the strategy as agreed by The Charity Board of Trustees, including the development of new income streams for the Charity, which will involve the development and management of new delivery mechanisms, such as subsidiary companies, ensuring financial compliance.
