About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Registered Mental Health Nurse to join our Early Days in Custody Team at HMP Elmley. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in providing holistic care to prisoners during their first 14 days in custody.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct comprehensive health and social care assessments for new prisoners, identifying immediate health, risks, and safety needs.
  2. Develop initial mental health crisis plans for patients at risk of a mental health crisis.
  3. Lead on identifying patients whose needs, risks, or circumstances have changed following a return from court or hospital.
  4. Collaborate with other specialist services to ensure continuity of care and through-the-gate arrangements.
  5. Provide brief interventions for substance misuse and mental wellbeing, including sleep hygiene advice and breathing techniques for anxiety management.

Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse qualification.
  • At least 2 years post-qualification experience as an RMN.
  • Extensive clinical experience, including individual and group work reflecting social inclusion.
  • Supervisory experience of junior staff and students.
  • Ability to establish rapport with difficult-to-engage service users.
  • Effective written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
