Job Overview


West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust seeks an exceptional Practice Development Midwife to play a pivotal role in advancing maternity care.


As a Practice Development Midwife, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating educational and developmental programmes for midwives and other healthcare professionals to improve clinical practices and patient outcomes.


This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to identify areas for improvement and implementing quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and satisfaction.


Key responsibilities include developing curriculum, training materials, and resources to enhance clinical skills and knowledge, staying updated on the latest evidence-based practices in midwifery, and conducting training sessions and workshops for midwives.


You will also provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance the skills of the maternity care team, promote continuous professional development for staff, and support the delivery of onboarding for new starters.


Main Duties



  • Develop curriculum, training materials, and resources to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Stay updated on the latest evidence-based practices in midwifery.
  • Develop and update clinical guidelines and standards to ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops for midwives to improve their clinical competencies.
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance the skills of the maternity care team.
  • Promote continuous professional development for staff and be able to signpost to relevant staff/agencies as required.
  • Support the delivery of onboarding for new starters and provide efficient and effective inductions, liaising with the lead midwife for education and recruitment/onboarding team.

Education and Qualifications


Essential Criteria



  • Registered Midwife with a UK NMC Pin.
  • SSSA/Mentorship qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable Criteria



  • PGCert.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of educational standards and practice.
  • Understanding of the principles of teaching and learning and their application within the practice setting.

Desirable Criteria



  • Understanding and knowledge of curriculum design and development.
  • Awareness of MIS/Core competency framework and other local, regional, and national initiatives.
  • Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods.

Experience


Essential Criteria



  • Substantial post-registration experience, with evidence of working in all areas of maternity.

Desirable Criteria



  • Experience teaching in a variety of settings.
  • Able to present articulately to large groups of people.

  • Proficient in venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing, and episiotomy.

  • Demonstrates understanding of PDM role and able to recognise when to escalate to PDM Lead.
  • Ability to co-ordinate and liaise within a multidisciplinary team.

  • IT/Computer literate.

Key Responsibilities


The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing maternity care through the development and implementation of educational and developmental programmes for midwives and other healthcare professionals.

Working with the Team


The Practice Development Midwife will work closely with the lead midwife for education, education team members, and other healthcare professionals, including obstetricians, nurses, and administrators.
