Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Practice Development Midwife (PDM) to contribute to the advancement of midwifery practices within West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

As a PDM, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating educational and developmental programmes for midwives and other healthcare professionals to improve clinical practices and patient outcomes.

The role involves developing curriculum, training materials, and resources to enhance clinical skills and knowledge, as well as staying updated on the latest evidence-based practices in midwifery.

You will work closely with the lead midwife for education, education team members, and other healthcare professionals to identify areas for improvement in maternity care and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and satisfaction.

Main Duties of the Job

Develop curriculum, training materials, and resources to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.

Stay updated on the latest evidence-based practices in midwifery.

Develop and update clinical guidelines and standards to ensure adherence to best practices.

Conduct training sessions and workshops for midwives to improve their clinical competencies.

Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance the skills of the maternity care team.

Collaborate with healthcare teams to identify areas for improvement in maternity care.

Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and satisfaction.

Engage in research activities to contribute to the advancement of midwifery practices.

Education and Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Midwife with a UK NMC Pin
  • SSSA/Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable Criteria

  • PGCert

Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of educational standards and practice
  • Understanding of the principles of teaching and learning and their application within the practice setting

Desirable Criteria

  • Understanding and knowledge of curriculum design and development
  • Awareness of MIS/Core competency framework and other local, regional, and national initiatives
  • Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Substantial post-registration experience, with evidence of working in all areas of maternity

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience teaching in a variety of settings
  • Able to present articulately to large groups of people

Skills and Ability

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Proficient in venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing, and episiotomy
  • Ability to give effective feedback and feedforward to maternity staff

  • Demonstrates leadership skills
  • Demonstrates understanding of PDM role and able to recognise when to escalate to PDM Lead
  • Ability to co-ordinate and liaise within a multidisciplinary team
