Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD researcher to join our team at the University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Colm Durkan to investigate the processes behind nucleation, growth, and separation of bubbles in alkaline electrolysers.

About the Project

This project is part of a larger initiative between the Department of Engineering and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows, funded by BP-ICAM (International Centre for Advanced Materials). The ultimate goal of this research is to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production, which is currently severely hampered by issues related to bubble formation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate the processes behind bubble nucleation, growth, and separation in alkaline electrolysers
  • Develop and apply advanced experimental and theoretical techniques to understand the role of electrode structure, composition, and surfaces in bubble formation
  • Design and fabricate electrodes with the intention of actively controlling where and how bubbles form

Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in an Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related subject.

How to Apply

Applications should be submitted via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal, with Professor Colm Durkan identified as the potential supervisor.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

The University actively supports equality, diversity, and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
