Ocean Forecast Engineer

We are looking for an exceptional Ocean Forecast Engineer to join our team at the Met Office. As a key member of our Ocean Forecast Verification team, you will play a crucial role in developing and supporting tools to assess and monitor the quality and accuracy of our ocean forecasts.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in scientific programming languages such as Python, Linux, or Bash, and experience with common data analysis and visualization tools. You will be responsible for creating innovative solutions to complex problems, working closely with others to understand requirements and context, and ensuring high-quality software coding standards.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on life-changing projects that make a real difference to our planet. The salary for this role is up to £37,776 per annum, which includes a range of benefits such as an outstanding Civil Service pension, Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA), and annual leave starting at 27.5 days rising to 32.5 days after 5 years.
Key responsibilities:
- Development and technical support of our ocean post-processing systems
- Development of novel verification and observation processing tools
- Enhancing how we visualize our models to assist monitoring and assessment of forecast performance
- Working to integrate ocean forecast verification within coupled atmosphere-ocean systems
