We are seeking a talented Scientific Computing Expert to join our team at the Met Office, where you will play a crucial role in developing and supporting tools for ocean forecasting. Your expertise in software development and scientific computing will enable us to improve the accuracy of our forecasts and make a positive impact on our planet.

The successful candidate will work within the Ocean Forecast Verification team to develop novel verification and observation processing tools, as well as enhance how we visualize our models to assist monitoring and assessment of forecast performance. You will also be responsible for integrating ocean forecast verification within coupled atmosphere-ocean systems.

  • You will have experience with common scientific programming languages such as Python, Linux, Bash, or similar.
  • You will engage with others to understand the requirements for your work and its wider context, and contribute to the development of plans to meet these requirements.
  • You will apply good Quality Assurance processes, best practice, and/or software coding standards in your work.
  • You will communicate knowledge accurately and concisely in written documents and group discussions, tailoring communication for diverse audiences and building trust / credibility.

The total reward package for this role includes a salary of up to £46,974 annually, which includes:

  • A base pay of £33,794 per annum.
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • A Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) of £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills.
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years, with option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.
