Job Overview

We are seeking a talented Scientific Software Developer - Ocean Forecasting to join our team at the Met Office.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on developing and supporting tools assessing and monitoring ocean forecast quality and accuracy.

The role may be suitable for hybrid working, with an employee working part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.

The opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, and we'll try to accommodate job sharers.

Job Description

You will work within the Ocean Forecast Verification team to develop and support tools assessing and monitoring ocean forecast quality and accuracy, and systems used to verify, post-process, and deliver these forecasts.

The team is part of the Ocean Forecasting R&D group, which develops operational forecast systems for physical ocean dynamics, waves, and ecosystems. These systems combine numerical models with observations, providing a digital representation of the global ocean and shelf seas surrounding the UK.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Development and technical support for ocean post-processing systems delivering forecasts to users like the Royal Navy and RNLI.
  • Development of novel verification and observation processing tools.
  • Enhancing how we visualize our models to aid monitoring and assessment of forecast performance.
  • Integrating ocean forecast verification within coupled atmosphere-ocean systems.
About You

We're looking for someone who can show technical insight through effective application of technical knowledge, understanding, and skills. Experience with common scientific programming languages/environments like Python, Linux, Bash, or similar is essential.

You should be able to engage with others to understand requirements and wider context, consider Quality Assurance processes, best practice, and software coding standards, and communicate knowledge accurately and concisely in written documents and discussions.

A salary of up to £37,776 annually is offered, including:

  • £26,954 base pay.
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) of £2,200 per annum, paid as a market supplement from April 2024 until September 2025.
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays), rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years, with option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year.
