This role offers an exciting opportunity to develop as a specialist biomedical scientist within Microbiology at Leeds. As a key member of the team, you will be instrumental in helping to develop a collaborative microbiology service working alongside other trusts in West Yorkshire.

The post is based at Leeds General Infirmary, with plans to relocate to St James University Hospital when microbiology services transfer in 2024/25. You will participate in providing cover for the service after suitable training, ensuring continuity and high-quality results.

About the Role

This full-time position involves working within Bacteriology, with rotation within Mycology and Environmental and Waters Laboratories. You will be allocated to a laboratory section where you will work with other scientists and support staff to process samples and report results.

As a band 6, you are expected to supervise within sections and will be trained to be responsible for technical authorisation of results. Your role will involve performing a wide range of complex technical procedures, including the safe and effective use of highly complex laboratory equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory tasks, including sample processing and result reporting.
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities to ensure high-quality results.
  • Develop and validate in-house quality control material and reagents.
  • Operate and maintain highly complex laboratory equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Contribute to the production of laboratory documentation, such as SOPs, risk assessments, and training records.
  • Support a robust programme of training and competency assessment within the area of specialist responsibility.

Requirements

  • Accredited degree in biomedical sciences or equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
  • Extensive practical experience, in-house training, and structured study through the IBMS specialist portfolio programme.
  • Basic computer skills and the use of various laboratory and Trust-based databases.
  • Mandatory training required for the role, including basic HR functions, appraisal, incident investigation, etc.

Salary Information

The estimated salary for this role is £45,754 - £53,857 per annum, depending on experience.
