Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineering Apprentice to join our team at the Medical Research Council. As a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, you will be responsible for developing your skills in machining, fitting, and assembly, as well as working with conventional and CNC machines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To become proficient in the machining of components, including milling and turning on conventional and CNC machines in different materials.
  • To produce simple working models and drawings of projects using a design package such as SolidWorks and Fusion 360, and to keep accurate records of work.
  • To obtain a high level of competence in mechanical fitting and assembly skills, including the use of hand tools and marking out.
  • To produce precision components to meet mechanical design drawing specifications, requiring daily use of conventional and CNC machines supported with the use of hand inspection tools.
  • To problem-solve associated manufacturing issues and collaborate closely with colleagues at all levels, advising on best practice and recommending ways of overcoming manufacturing obstacles.
  • To weld non-ferrous components using Tig welding techniques.

Working Relationships:

To work under the direction of a member of the workshop staff, reporting to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop and working in collaboration with other members of workshop staff.

Additional Information:

You will undertake the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship standard, which will include:

  • Practical skills, including hand fitting, turning, and machining.
  • On-the-job competency training.
  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence).
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge).
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge).

Training will primarily be delivered and assessed in the workplace, with attendance at West Suffolk College on a day-release basis required. You must be willing and able to travel independently.
