Job Summary:


We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineering Apprentice to join our team at the Medical Research Council. The successful candidate will work under the direction of a member of the workshop staff and report to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Develop proficiency in machining components using conventional and CNC machines in various materials.
  • Produce accurate working models and drawings of projects using design packages like SolidWorks and Fusion 360.
  • Obtain high-level competence in mechanical fitting and assembly skills, including the use of hand tools and marking out.
  • Produce precision components that meet mechanical design specifications using conventional and CNC machines.
  • Solve manufacturing issues and collaborate with colleagues to advise on best practices and recommend solutions.
  • Weld non-ferrous components using Tig welding techniques.

Working Relationships:


The successful candidate will work under the direction of a member of the workshop staff and report to the Head of the Mechanical Workshop.


Training and Development:


The successful candidate will undertake the Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship standard, which will include practical skills, on-the-job competency training, and Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Machining.


Person Specification:


Education and Qualifications:



  • Essential: 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including minimum Grade B/5 in Mathematics, and Grade C/4 in English and a Science.
  • Commitment to undertaking and completing the Machining Technician Apprenticeship.

Previous Work Experience:



  • Essential: Excellent computer literacy skills, experience of working as part of a team, and the ability to use own initiative to prioritise workload.

  • Creativity and Initiative: Ability to demonstrate creative ideas.
  • Independent Working: Ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision following given advice and training.
  • Verbal and Written Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication, ability to follow and understand instructions, and ability to record designs and work on a computer.
  • Personal Skills and Behaviours: Ability to demonstrate and convey an interest and some basic technical engineering/machining knowledge and skill, self-motivated with good interpersonal skills, ability to work accurately and under pressure, and demonstrates commitment and desire for the role.
