Advocate for Consumer Voice in Scotland's Communications Sector

Ofcom seeks a part-time Member for Scotland to join the Communications Consumer Panel, also acting as a Member of the Advisory Committee for Older and Disabled People (ACOD). The successful candidate will chair the Panel's Stakeholder Hub for Scotland and observe at Ofcom's National Advisory Committee for Scotland meetings. This role is ideal for an individual with experience advocating for consumer interests or working with vulnerable communities.
Core Responsibilities
The appointed Member will dedicate four days per month, including one formal Panel meeting day, with an additional six days' commitment to chair the Stakeholder Hub for Scotland. Quarterly National Advisory Committee for Scotland meetings are also expected. The role operates on a hybrid-working basis, requiring some travel to Edinburgh, London, Belfast, or Cardiff. Individuals' needs and adjustments will be accommodated.
Required Skills and Qualifications
To excel in this position, candidates should possess:
• A deep understanding of citizen and consumer needs in Scotland, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances
• Strong knowledge of Scotland's political and constitutional context
• Excellent communication skills for effective contribution to high-level discussions and policy responses
• Familiarity with rural and remote communities' experiences with communications services in Scotland
• Ability to learn about telecoms, postal services, and digital sectors, influencing industry and policymaker proposals
• Strong teamwork and committee work skills
About the Role
The Communications Consumer Panel ensures that consumer and citizen voices are represented in communications policy development. The role involves collaborating with stakeholders to inform advice and protect consumers' interests across the sector. ACOD advises Ofcom on older and disabled people's interests in the UK. This appointment aims to enhance the Panel's alignment with consumer, citizen, and micro-business needs in Scotland.
