Job Summary

Solos Consultants Ltd is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Health Officer to join our team on an initial 3-month contract. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a corporately responsible and accessible Environmental Health service, delivering legislative enforcement, advice, and education to promote and secure an enhanced sustainable and safe environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect and Collect Data
    • Conduct surveys and inspections of premises, investigate incidents and accidents, and measure environmental factors to collect accurate data.
    • Record data in written or electronic form to inform decision-making regarding environmental health conditions.
  • Evaluate and Appraise Collected Data
    • Assess and prioritize levels of risk and compare with standards to identify deficiencies and determine the most appropriate method of improving environmental health conditions.
  • Enforce Minimum Legal Environmental Health Standards
    • Use legal powers to collect and present evidence, serve legal notices, make orders, seize equipment or goods, and pursue court proceedings to enforce minimum legal environmental health standards.
    • Prepare prosecution files, interview under caution, and liaise with Legal and appointed Solicitor/Barrister/Counsel as necessary.
  • Specify, Schedule, and Supervise Required Works
    • Specify and schedule required works under legal powers or through contractual or voluntary arrangements to ensure the improvement of environmental health conditions.
  • Communicate with Members of the Public and Others
    • Communicate with members of the public and others in a variety of media to respond effectively to complaints, explain legislative standards, mediate between conflicting individuals and groups, train and educate, promote council initiatives, and engage the public through consultation in the development and delivery of the service.
  • Collaborate with Businesses, Agencies, and Colleagues
    • Collaborate with businesses, other agencies, organizations, and colleagues across the authority to develop and improve joint projects/ways of working, such as acting as Primary Authority Manager, main contact, attending meetings, drafting agreements and inspection plans, and providing authoritative advice for local and national businesses.
    Requirements
    • Qualifications and Experience
      • Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health and registration with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHRB).
      • Considerable post-qualification Environmental Health practice experience with a good knowledge and understanding of Environmental Health issues, including legislation, regulations, codes, and good practice.
    • Specialisms
      • Detailed experience of the effective delivery of one of the following Environmental Health specialisms: Food safety, Health & safety, Housing, Pollution control, Port Health, Infectious Disease Control.
    • Skills and Abilities
      • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge of Environmental Health effectively and appropriately in practical situations.
      • Commitment to and understanding of issues of quality of service, customer focus, and equality of access to services.
