Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to join our multidisciplinary Hand Therapy department at Barts Health NHS Trust. As a Specialist Hand Therapist, you will provide clinical expertise for a caseload of hand therapy patients from multiple referral routes, working closely with plastic surgery and orthopaedic colleagues within MDT clinics and on service development projects.

Main Duties

You will lead service development and review, ensuring the service provides safe, high-quality, evidence-based, and holistic management of hand therapy patients. Your responsibilities will include providing high-quality and specialist occupational therapy interventions to a wide variety of outpatients, including the advanced assessment and treatment of hand trauma, rheumatology, and Tower Hamlets GP-referred patients.

Person Specification

  • Clinical experience in a range of specialties relevant to the rotation, with mandatory rotation experience in musculoskeletal upper limb caseloads
  • Knowledge of a broad range of clinical conditions
  • Demonstrated completion of KSF full-outline requirements for Band 5 staff
  • Equipment provision and assessment
  • Working within a multidisciplinary and/or occupational therapy team
  • Contributing to professional development and clinical education of more junior staff, students, and assistants
  • Experience of working with a musculoskeletal upper limb caseload
  • Experience in the prescription and fabrication of splints

Desirable Criteria

  • Involvement in audit, research, and understanding of quality issues
  • Knowledge of local community services and agencies (i.e., intermediate care, day hospital)
  • Experience working in an integrated occupational therapy service

Skills

  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications for occupational therapy and client care
  • Ability to prioritise, organise, and delegate
  • Ability to communicate and present information, orally and in writing, in a clear and logical manner
  • Understanding of the legal responsibilities of the profession
  • Ability to keep accurate and legible patient notes in line with local and national standards and policies
  • Ability to carry out moderate to intense physical effort throughout the working day and manage competing demands and interruptions
  • Ability to cope working in a fast-paced and stressful environment and with emotional and/or aggressive patients and carers
  • Ability to work autonomously, acting decisively on behalf of self and others, setting own priorities
  • Ability to assess and act against risks to self, clients as a consequence of exposure to clients and environments which may be highly distressing, antagonistic, open to aggression and/or unpleasant
  • Ability to assess, advise, and educate clients and carers about safe manual handling techniques (including use of equipment and adaptations)

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • DBS clearance
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at recent postgraduate courses/training relevant to rotational clinical specialties
