Teddington, Greater London, United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory Full time

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced materials scientist to join our team in the Advanced Engineering Materials group at National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington. This is a unique scientific facility that supports UK industry, alongside a team of internationally recognised scientists and engineers. We develop new test methods and make measurements of a unique nature.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will be working within a team of scientists and engineers, helping to deliver NPL's National Measurement System (NMS) funded research programme with a focus on developing a metrology infrastructure for polymer composites.
  • You will deliver and take ownership of aspects of work focussed on metrology for energy efficient manufacturing processes, circularity of materials and high value products, and mechanical, thermal, and physical performance evaluation of existing, emerging, and new formats of materials under challenging environments.
  • You will be undertaking projects for a wide range of external customers.
  • Your role will include writing scientific reports and peer reviewed papers, as well as presenting at conferences, to customer and at internal meetings.
  • Alongside your role there will be opportunities to learn standardised testing, and to develop bespoke mechanical testing techniques for the laboratory.

About You

You'll be a positive and self-motivated materials scientist who is keen to develop a career in materials science with a special interest in characterisation of polymer composites using a wide range of advanced measurement techniques.

Your role will involve experimental work in the laboratory, data exploration, written reports/papers, presentations and customer facing activities. You'll solve problems in the laboratory and ensure timely delivery of research and commercial contracts for industrial customers. The emphasis of your work will be the development of bespoke measurement solutions rather than routine measurements.

Requirements:

  • A degree in engineering or materials science.
  • The desire to make a research theme your own and the ambition to become a nationally/internationally known materials scientist
  • Confident in mechanical design and an ability to visualise practical solutions to complex engineering problems.
  • Practical skills such as design and build, use of hand tools, drills etc.
  • Familiarity with Solidworks or a similar 3D CAD package
  • Familiarity with different types of materials and basic materials testing techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Proficient in use of office-based IT software systems such as Word, Excel etc
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and keen to learn.
