We are seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to join our Multi-disciplinary Hand Therapy department at Bart's Health NHS Trust. As a Senior Hand Therapist, you will provide clinical expertise for a caseload of hand therapy patients from multiple referral routes. You will work closely with our plastic surgery and orthopaedic colleagues within MDT clinics and on service development projects within the team, and with Rheumatology.
The role involves making hand therapy provision to patients on the day of their surgery to support the Day Zero Hand Therapy Pathway. You will be joining a large and diverse MSK team that spans across the whole MSK pathway, comprising Secondary care consultants, nurse practitioners, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, and Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners.
As a Senior Hand Therapist, you will lead service development and review, ensuring the service provides safe, high-quality, evidence-based, and holistic management of hand therapy patients. You will also work in secondary care clinics, with the support of the wider MDT.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop hand therapy clinical, leadership, research, and educational skills.
Main DutiesTo provide client-centered occupational therapy or physiotherapy for clients referred to the Hand Therapy Service. The service accepts referrals for clients who have hand or upper limb dysfunction due to injury or illness, particularly in the areas of trauma, plastic and orthopaedics, and acquired conditions rheumatology and GP referrals, and some neurology.
This highly specialized service is provided to clients mainly in a hospital setting but may have a community focus. The service adopts a holistic approach, offering assessment and treatment to reduce disability and the impact of the disability arising from physical illness and injury.
The post holder will also have the opportunity to provide a service to other clients referred directly from the community.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical expertise for a caseload of hand therapy patients
- Work closely with plastic surgery and orthopaedic colleagues within MDT clinics
- Lead service development and review
- Work in secondary care clinics with the support of the wider MDT
- Develop hand therapy clinical, leadership, research, and educational skills
- Appropriate Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy postgraduate clinical experience at Band 6 level or above
- Experience in supervision of junior staff, students, and assistants
- Member of the British Association of Occupational Therapy or Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
- BAHT Membership
- Supervision Training
- Postgraduate formal qualification relevant to clinical specialty
- Leadership training
- Involvement in relevant COT special interest group
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
- HPC registration
- Fulfills KSF outline for Occupational Therapist (Band 6)
- Appropriate postgraduate clinical experience including one year's recent experience in an appropriate specialty
- Experience of supervision junior staff, students, and assistants
- Clinical experience in the NHS or similar health service
- Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at postgraduate courses/training relevant to clinical specialty
- CSP membership (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy) or RCOT (Royal College of Occupational Therapy) Membership
