London, Greater London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time
Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to join our Multi-disciplinary Hand Therapy department at Barts Health NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be based at the Royal London Hospital, providing clinical expertise for a caseload of hand therapy patients from multiple referral routes.

The role will involve close working with plastic surgery and orthopaedic colleagues within MDT clinics and on service development projects within the team. On completing competencies, there will be an opportunity to make hand therapy provision to patients on the day of their surgery to support the Day Zero Hand Therapy Pathway.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality and specialist occupational therapy interventions to a wide variety of outpatients, including the advanced assessment and treatment of hand trauma, rheumatology, and Tower Hamlets GP-referred patients.

They will also be expected to work in secondary care clinics, with the support of the wider MDT, and to utilise their specialist skills to work without direct supervision with patients who vary greatly in age, communication ability, language, functional ability, cultural, and social background.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have:

  • Clinical experience in a range of specialties relevant to the rotation, with mandatory rotation experience in musculoskeletal upper limb caseloads
  • Knowledge of a broad range of clinical conditions
  • Demonstrated completion of KSF full-outline requirements for Band 5 staff
  • Equipment provision and assessment
  • Working within a multidisciplinary and/or occupational therapy team
  • Contributing to professional development and clinical education of more junior staff, students, and assistants
  • Experience of working with a musculoskeletal upper limb caseload
  • Experience in the prescription and fabrication of splints

Desirable criteria include involvement in audit, research, and understanding of quality issues, knowledge of local community services and agencies, and experience working in an integrated occupational therapy service.

The successful candidate will also have the ability to communicate and present information, orally and in writing, in a clear and logical manner, and to keep accurate and legible patient notes in line with local and national standards and policies.

They will also be able to carry out moderate to intense physical effort throughout the working day and manage competing demands and interruptions, and to cope working in a fast-paced and stressful environment and with emotional and/or aggressive patients and carers.

Finally, the successful candidate will have the ability to work autonomously, acting decisively on behalf of self and others, setting own priorities, and to assess and act against risks to self, clients, as a consequence of exposure to clients and environments which may be highly distressing, antagonistic, open to aggression, and/or unpleasant.
