Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom AtkinsRéalis Full time
Position Overview

Are you an experienced Materials Engineer with expertise in manufacturing, welding, non-destructive testing (NDT), or corrosion? Do you excel in tackling intricate challenges and aspire to take on leadership roles in complex design initiatives?

If this resonates with you, consider addressing the critical materials challenges faced by the energy sector across diverse clients. Your role will involve evaluating materials degradation risks and enhancing the longevity of operational nuclear facilities, as well as innovating new applications, methodologies, and testing protocols for the fabrication and welding of next-generation reactors. You will collaborate with designers and manufacturers to resolve issues and implement effective solutions regarding materials compatibility and production techniques.

Your contributions will support significant projects, including the UK Submarine and Nuclear New Build programs, and various renewable energy initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. You will likely manage multiple projects concurrently, necessitating a high degree of adaptability. The consistent aspect of this role is the intricate nature of the tasks and the opportunity to provide creative solutions to a variety of challenges for numerous appreciative clients.

Regardless of the specific energy-related projects you engage with, you will be involved in crafting engineering solutions to some of the industry's most pressing issues, thereby making a meaningful and rewarding impact on the energy and environmental security of the UK and beyond.

If you are a proactive individual capable of managing several projects simultaneously while collaborating closely with clients and internal teams to gather requirements, initiate projects, and deliver effective solutions for the most demanding challenges in the energy sector, we encourage you to explore this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:

You will operate within small to medium-sized multidisciplinary teams. To leverage the collective expertise of the team and our clients, fostering innovative thinking, you will work in a collaborative and supportive office or site environment for at least half of your working week. You may also be stationed at client offices or operational sites. A level of commercial awareness is essential to effectively manage tasks across multiple workstreams while adhering to timelines, quality standards, and budget constraints.

Essential Qualifications:
  • A degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Corrosion, or a related mechanical engineering discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Proven experience in addressing materials, manufacturing, welding, and corrosion issues within the nuclear, conventional power, or offshore sectors.
  • Experience in producing precise, detailed, and concise technical documentation relevant to the role (e.g., materials selection reports, fabrication and welding specifications, inspection and quality plans, corrosion/aging management strategies).
  • Ability to engage effectively with existing and prospective clients, working on-site and dedicating time to understand their challenges, objectives, and processes.
Preferred Experience:
  • Design for manufacturing utilizing established models, design codes, procedures, and databases. Familiarity with design and construction codes such as ASME, RCC-M, or harmonized EN standards.
  • Conventional machining, welding, non-destructive testing, and dimensional inspection.
  • Understanding of materials performance and aging mechanisms in nuclear power facilities.
  • Knowledge of coolant chemistry and strategies for mitigating oxidation/corrosion in reactor coolants.
  • Experience in drafting bids within a safety-critical and heavily regulated environment.
  • Chartered status with a relevant professional institution (or nearing application for registration).
