Job Description

The Office for Place seeks an urban designer to support the delivery of innovative tools and products that aid local authorities and developers in designing better places.



This exciting opportunity is part of an organisation that aims to catalyse a fundamental change in the way government, communities, and the development industry create and steward sustainable places.



As an urban designer, you will contribute to the development of digital design code elements, collaborate with stakeholders, and provide expert design advice to local planning authorities.



You will be part of a new organisation at the beginning of its journey, with opportunities to shape the programme of work and build its credibility as an expert voice in design, planning, and placemaking.



The successful candidate will have experience in urban design and planning, knowledge of national development and placemaking issues, and the ability to deliver projects to time and budget.

Key Responsibilities



  • Develop and implement design codes

  • Contribute to the development of digital design code elements

  • Provide expert design advice to local planning authorities

  • Represent the Office for Place at external sector events

  • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure that our work is relevant and meets the needs of local authority planning officers



Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have a qualification in town planning, urban design, or architecture, with relevant professional experience in urban design and planning at a strategic scale.



They will have demonstrable experience of working in or closely with a local planning authority, knowledge of national development and placemaking issues, and the ability to deliver projects to time and budget.



They will also possess excellent communication skills, be confident in speaking publicly, and have the ability to report to the Executive Team and the Office for Place board.
