Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced urban designer to join our team at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. As an Urban Design Tools Manager, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of innovative tools, templates, and products to help local authorities, developers, and other planning and development stakeholders design better and higher-quality places.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an organisation that is shaping the future of placemaking in the UK. You will be working closely with our team to develop and implement design codes, support local planning authorities, and represent the Office for Place at external sector events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Bring urban design expertise to support the delivery of relevant and useful urban design digital tools
  • Deliver consultation exercises with the sector on emerging tools and ensure that any tools and products meet the needs of our key stakeholder base
  • Support the launch and maintenance of the digital design code library and ensure that the content is relevant for planning officers and urban designers
  • Provide expert design advice and support to local planning authorities and Office for Place officials on the tools and products needed to support better design and placemaking
  • Represent the Office for Place with the necessary credibility and sector experience at external sector events
Person Specification

We are looking for an experienced urban designer with a qualification in town planning, urban design, or architecture and relevant professional experience in urban design and planning at a strategic scale. You will have demonstrable experience of working in or closely with a local planning authority and knowledge of national development, planning, and placemaking issues.

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the distinct stages of the planning process, particularly in relation to large-scale development, and be able to effectively judge the effectiveness of design and planning policies produced by local authorities. You will also need to have experience of working with Adobe Creative Cloud and CAD to create 2D and 3D visuals and infographics.

You will be an initiative-taking, self-starter who can think strategically and is able to solve complex problems. You will be confident using evidence and insight in your work, making effective decisions informed by feedback from multiple stakeholders. You will possess excellent communication skills and be confident in speaking publicly and engaging with local authorities, communities, and the planning and development sector.
