We are seeking an experienced urban designer to join our team at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. As an Urban Design Tools Manager, you will play a key role in developing and implementing innovative tools and products to support better design and placemaking.
About the RoleThis is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new organisation that is shaping the future of place making. You will work closely with our team to deliver a range of projects, including the development of digital design code elements, consultation exercises with the sector, and the launch and maintenance of our digital design code library.
You will have the opportunity to work with a range of stakeholders, including government officials, local planning authorities, and the development industry. You will be responsible for providing expert design advice and support to our stakeholders, and for representing our organisation at external sector events.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement innovative tools and products to support better design and placemaking
- Work closely with our team to deliver a range of projects, including the development of digital design code elements and consultation exercises with the sector
- Launch and maintain our digital design code library
- Provide expert design advice and support to our stakeholders
- Represent our organisation at external sector events
We are looking for an experienced urban designer with a qualification in town planning, urban design, or architecture. You will have relevant professional experience in urban design and planning at a strategic scale, and knowledge of national development, planning and placemaking issues.
You will have demonstrable experience of working in or closely with a local planning authority, and experience developing and implementing design codes is beneficial but not essential. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the distinct stages of the planning process, particularly in relation to large scale development, to be able to effectively judge the effectiveness of design and planning policies produced by local authorities and to promote innovation and best practice.
You will need to have demonstrable experience of working with Adobe Creative Cloud and CAD to create 2D and 3D visuals and infographics. You will have an ability to deliver projects to time and budget, requiring strong project management skills and experience of working with delivery partners or stakeholders, and / or having oversight of external suppliers.
You will be an initiative-taking, self-starter who can think strategically and is able to solve complex problems. You will be confident using evidence and insight in your work, making effective decisions informed by feedback from multiple stakeholders. You will possess excellent communication skills and be confident in speaking publicly and engaging with local authorities, communities, and the planning and development sector.
