Senior Train Running Controller Job Description

About Network Rail

Our passengers and freight users are at the heart of everything we do. We help connect people to their friends and families and get goods to their destination safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the team of train running controllers on shift to maintain and manage the train service on our network.
  • Assist the team in achieving On Time, T3, T15, and T30 performance measures for passenger operators and the Freight Delivery Measure for freight operators.
  • Provide track access to our Train and Freight Operators.
  • Suggest improvements to our contingency plans, service recovery measures, and provide performance feedback to our teams on shift.
  • Be the escalation point on shift for any matters relating to service recovery and mitigation.

Requirements

  • Rules awareness.
  • Knowledge of passenger and freight operating procedures.
  • Operational experience within a control environment as a Controller.
  • Confidence and proficiency in chairing and conducting multi-participant conferences with customers and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the Working Timetable, together with detailed working knowledge of Route timetables.
  • Knowledge of Train Operating Companies' organisational structure, operational strategy, deployment, and routes.
  • Good geographical knowledge of applicable routes.
  • Demonstrable skills in the use of Microsoft Office package and Control specific software.
  • Able to manage conflict, influence others, and work under pressure.
  • Good understanding of commercial business objectives within Network Rail and Train Operating Companies.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of train service contingency plans, service recovery principles, and train regulation policies.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Geographical knowledge of adjoining routes.
  • Working knowledge of the Railway Operating Code.
