Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as a Head of Goods Trade. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and implementing trade policy that protects and promotes the health and care interests of the UK.

About the Role

The Head of Goods Trade will be responsible for leading trade policy work on medicines and public health as part of the negotiation of Free Trade Agreements and multilaterally. This is a high-profile aspect of trade work across government and plays a leading role in protecting UK health interests and maximising trade opportunities for the life sciences sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement trade policy on issues relating to medicines, working across government and with life sciences stakeholders as required.
  • Build strong working relationships with the intellectual property office (IPO) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT) among others.
  • Engage and influence across government to ensure that our priorities are reflected in the UK's wider approach to its trade work.
  • Support preparation for upcoming negotiations, including the briefing needed by negotiators, and ensure that we are following up on actions from each negotiating round.
  • Attend negotiations as the DHSC representative.
  • Support the implementation of relevant aspects of trade deals where required, including working with DBT on relevant legislation.
  • Play a cross-cutting role across the team in supporting our efforts to negotiate trade deals, including through supporting project management and governance.
Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Previous experience working on policy, such as developing or implementing a policy or strategy.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to explain complex issues and adapt your communications to meet the needs of different audiences.
  • Ability to confidently build and maintain strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, both inside and outside of government, to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, balancing a range of competing priorities whilst ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Experience of briefing senior officials on complex issues.
