The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Deputy Culture & Lifestyle Editor to join our team on a maternity cover contract. As a key member of our editorial team, you will be responsible for driving our UK coverage and helping to shape the direction of our culture and lifestyle section.

Key Responsibilities
  • Write engaging features, expert analysis, and weekly arts newsletters that showcase your knowledge and passion for the arts.
  • Commission and edit exciting features and reviews that showcase the best of culture and lifestyle.
  • Lead on coverage of books, theatre, and art subsections, working closely with our team to deliver high-quality content.
  • Edit and facilitate across other areas of culture and lifestyle, ensuring that our content is engaging and relevant to our audience.
  • Run the department in the Head of Culture and Lifestyle's absence, taking charge of editorial decisions and ensuring that our content meets the highest standards.
  • Help manage and nurture our in-house culture team, providing guidance and support to ensure their success.
  • Secure interviews with public figures in the arts, using your expertise and network to bring our readers the best possible content.
  • Work on partnerships, including liaising with external stakeholders and colleagues across the business, managing editorial requirements, and writing/commissioning content.
  • Maintain the books list for the newsroom, coordinating across departments to ensure that our content is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Write the IndyArts newsletter and work with our subscriptions team to ensure that our content meets their requirements.
  • Liaise with our head of audience and senior editors to ensure that our content is performing well and meeting our targets.
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Three years' experience as a feature writer and commissioning editor for a newspaper or news website.
  • Excellent contacts spanning the book, film, TV, music, comedy, and theatre industries.
  • An ability to spot trends and formulate original ideas across culture and lifestyle.
  • Ability to work well with a team and manage more junior members of staff.
  • An exceptional knowledge of the arts.
  • An understanding of The Independent brand and audience.
