The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing assessments of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for clients with mental health needs. The post holder will work under the overall supervision of the Integrated Team Manager/Matron and is required to undertake the duties of the post without direct supervision. Active participation will be required in the training and education of learners allocated to the Secure Services and will also encourage integration between the ward teams and the community services.

Main Duties of the Job
  • In liaison with the Integrated Clinical Lead/Matron, Service Manager and Director to set objectives for the delivery of care within the area and to devise ways of implementing and monitoring these.
  • To work closely with the Executive Nurse in developing nursing practice across inpatient wards.
  • To ensure full compliance with standards laid out in the Trust's CPA Policy & Procedure.
  • In coordination with the Integrated Clinical Lead/Matron, Service Manager and Director, report and investigate incidents, complaints, accidents and ensure all appropriate documentation is completed and submitted to the Director as soon as possible after the incident.
  • Participate in and evaluate audit and research within the unit.
  • To lead on infection control within the ward and ensure all Trust policies are adhered to.
  • Inform Integrated Clinical Lead/Matron, Service Manager and Director on all breaches of nursing professional conduct as required by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To be responsible for updating own knowledge of contemporary mental health services and a commitment to continuing one's own personal career development in line with Trust Appraisal and Development Policy.

The post holder will be required to participate in holding site/unit bleep as required and act at all times in accordance with the Midwifery and Nursing Council Code of Professional Practice, Scope of Professional Practice, Standards for Medicines management, Guidelines for Records and Record keeping, NMC Record Keeping, Revalidation, and demonstration of excellent leadership skills and the ability to delegate duties and address and resolve issues.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse with a minimum of 2 years experience as Deputy Ward Manager and evidence of personal and professional development in contemporary mental health practice. Educated to degree level and additional professional qualifications are desirable.

The post holder will be required to have the ability to support the team to meet KPIs and contractual targets, computer and IT literate, experience in serious incidents, HR management, record keeping audits, ligature audits, restrictive practice and complaint procedures, attending meetings and multi-professionals meetings. Understanding of Trust policies and procedures, knowledge of working with external agencies involved in the care of people with mental illness and previous experience working within secure settings are desirable.

The post holder will be required to have the ability to plan resource requirement to meet changing care needs, ability to plan ways of improving efficiency and cost effectiveness of clinical services, ability to coordinate work to meet agreed targets and deadlines, evidence of ability to prioritise workload and competing demands. Ability to demonstrate a consistent style of clinical leadership, develop team spirit and inclusivity, good understanding of national policy and the implications for mental health are desirable.
