Job Description

**Head of Science and Innovation Policy**

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our science and innovation policy efforts. As a key spokesperson for the Institute of Directors, you will engage with the business community to identify key concerns and challenges in respect of science, innovation, and technology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop thought leadership on the latest scientific and technological developments and their impact on the UK business community.
  • Develop policy proposals to create a policy environment that stimulates innovation, business productivity, and competitiveness.
  • Provide business-relevant insights and briefings on the latest developments in tech, science, and innovation to IoD members.
  • Organize policy publications, events, and other related activities.
  • Work closely with colleagues and volunteers across the national and regional IoD network to coordinate policy development and engagement strategies.
  • Liaise with other IoD departments to find areas of overlap between policy activities and other IoD services.
  • Build relationships with external stakeholders, such as government departments and industry associations, to advance the IoD's voice with external influencers and policy makers.
  • Ensure that all policy output is of high quality and consistent with the IoD's Purpose, Strategy, and Core Values.
  • Represent the IoD to external audiences, including policy makers, the media, and the IoD membership.

Requirements:

  • University graduate with at least a 2:1 in a relevant subject.
  • Postgraduate qualifications would be beneficial.
  • At least 5 years relevant post-university experience.
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of business-relevant science and technology issues and associated regulatory developments.
  • Good understanding of the UK's political, media, and policy landscape.
  • Ability to see how different areas of public policy interact.
  • Understanding of the impact of science/technology on boards/directors in the real world and on public policy at both the national and global level.
  • Experience in public policy analysis and advocacy, especially with regard to science, technology, and innovation.
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Ability to explain complex policy and science/technology issues to non-expert audiences.
  • Flexibility in engaging across a range of complex subjects.
  • Ability to work well with others, coordinating or directing projects.
  • Affinity with the IoD's goals of fostering good governance, a responsible business community, and a climate favorable to entrepreneurial activity and wealth creation.
  • Intellectual Curiosity: An ideas person with an inherent interest in science and technology and its application to business and policy.
