Job Description

Science and technologies are developing at an incredibly rapid pace. This is a high-profile and unique opportunity to work at the strategic centre of these developments at the cross-section of AI and biological capabilities.

Working alongside teams in other departments, this role leads on crafting HMG's strategic policies on the opportunities and risks concerning the convergence of AI and Engineering Biology. This will include:

  • Engaging across the Government, industry, academia, and internationally to understand the technological and geopolitical situation and context.
  • Deploying technical knowledge, experience, and critical thinking to create innovative solutions to the opportunities and risks.
  • Acting in a cross-Government leadership capacity to champion this work.

You will be a key part of the wider Engineering Biology team, which is a high-performing, dynamic, and inclusive team, being one of the five UK critical technologies teams. Key Responsibilities

As the lead official for AI-Bio, you will:

  • Engage across Government, industry, academia, and international partners to gather, analyze, and deploy insight on the cross-section of AI and Engineering Biology.
  • Work within DSIT and wider government to plan, develop, and deploy effective and impactful policies and interventions.
  • Proactively manage short-term tasks and requirements alongside longer-term strategic work.
  • Develop and manage a forward work plan for the team that accounts for technological, geopolitical, and security developments.
  • Line manage at least one policy official and act as a leader within the wider Government Eng Bio, AI, and national security communities.
  • Embody and role model DSIT values - think big, value people, create connections, and cultivate curiosity.
Skills and Experience

We are keen to hear from applicants that possess:

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in AI technologies that have applicability in Engineering Biology settings (such as biological design tools).

Desirable

  • Experience in effective diverse stakeholder management.
  • Wider policy development experience.
  • Experience in working within national security communities.

Alongside your salary of £52,320, Department for Science, Innovation & Technology contributes £15,157 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Office Attendance
