Job Overview

We are inviting applications for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate position in Sustainable Composites Engineering at the Bristol Composites Institute (BCI), a leading centre for composites research. The successful candidate will contribute to a £7.57m project, Eco-suite, funded by the UK Government to develop sustainable and lightweight materials for aircraft interiors.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Survey the literature to identify suitable bio-based and/or recyclable core materials for sandwich composites based on their mechanical performance and sustainability credentials.
  2. Develop finite element models of sandwich composites and core materials to understand representative load cases.
  3. Characterise and test polymer trim materials, sandwich composites, and core materials to understand their mechanical and physico-chemical performance.
Requirements
  • A good honours degree, postgraduate research degree, or doctoral level qualification in a relevant physical science or engineering subject.
  • The ability to contribute ideas for projects delivering industrial or academic impact.
  • The capacity to work collaboratively and manage your own workload and research direction as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of sandwich composite materials and their mechanical performance.
  • Experience in computational modelling, for example CAD or with finite elements, of complex structures.
  • Experience in experimental testing of materials and structures.
