Position Overview

Objective:

  • The Educational Research Specialist will collaborate with a team of experts in educational assessment to facilitate the execution of research and development initiatives.
  • This role necessitates the application of specialized knowledge in educational assessment and relevant research methodologies to independently execute research tasks while working within a collaborative framework and receiving appropriate guidance from project leaders.
  • As a subject matter expert, the Educational Research Specialist will undertake various responsibilities, including conducting literature reviews, analyzing quantitative or qualitative data with specialized software, and contributing to the preparation and delivery of presentations and reports.

Team Environment:
The Educational Research Specialist will be part of the Research and Development team, which operates within the Assessment Research and Innovation sector.

This team engages in both qualitative and quantitative educational research aimed at aiding AQA in the development of innovative, valid, and inclusive assessments, whether in traditional formats or digital platforms, while also influencing thought leadership in the field.

Our research agenda outlines our key areas of focus:
accessibility, fairness, equity, diversity, and inclusion; validity and innovation; marking, grading, and standards; the role of AI in education and assessment. The team's expertise spans a wide range of disciplines within the social and natural sciences. The successful candidate will benefit from numerous training, development, and mentorship opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:
Utilizing methodological expertise to enhance research design
Executing components of quantitative or qualitative research (e.g., literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, report writing) using appropriate software, while further developing skills gained through postgraduate education or recent experience
Collaborating within teams to ensure the successful completion of projects
Keeping abreast of current trends in the educational assessment landscape and relevant literature
Adhering to AQA's policies and procedures, particularly concerning Ethics and Data Protection
Contributing to research impact and engagement through report writing and other dissemination methods, gradually establishing a public presence in the assessment research community that bolsters AQA's reputation in educational assessment
Assisting in the continuous improvement of the team's research and development practices, fostering a positive team culture.

Essential Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree and a master's degree (or nearing completion) in psychology or education (other fields may also be considered), ideally with a focus on statistical training.

Alternatively, an equivalent professional qualification or relevant experience.
Familiarity with and developing expertise in postgraduate-level qualitative or quantitative research methodologies for the social sciences
Proven ability to communicate research findings effectively to diverse stakeholders in various formats (both written and verbal)
Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to critically analyze the development and functionality of assessments and their impact on education and opportunities.

They will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, with the capacity to comprehend and synthesize complex, varied, and incomplete information while articulating well-reasoned arguments.
The candidate will be adept at building strong professional relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and managing their workload to meet deadlines.

Preferred Experience:

Some exposure to applied research in an academic or commercial context.

Knowledge of principles related to educational or psychological assessment (e.g., validity and reliability)
Understanding of educational testing and test development principles (e.g., classical test theory, item response theory, psychometrics).
