Position Overview

Summary

Objective:

  • The Educational Research Specialist will collaborate with a team of assessment professionals to facilitate the execution of research and development initiatives.
  • This role necessitates the application of specialized knowledge in educational assessment and relevant research methodologies to independently conduct research tasks while working within collaborative projects and receiving appropriate guidance from project leaders.
  • As a subject matter expert, the Educational Research Specialist will oversee various components of research projects, including conducting literature reviews, analyzing quantitative or qualitative data with specialized software, and contributing to presentations and reports.

Team Environment:
The Educational Research Specialist will be part of the Research and Development team, which operates within the Assessment Research and Innovation sector. This team engages in both qualitative and quantitative educational research aimed at assisting AQA in developing innovative, valid, and inclusive assessments, whether delivered on paper or digitally, while also influencing sector-wide practices.

accessibility, fairness, equity, diversity, and inclusion; validity and innovation; marking, grading, and standards; and the role of AI in education and assessment. The team comprises professionals with backgrounds in social and natural sciences, covering a wide range of expertise. Key Responsibilities:
Utilizing methodological expertise to enhance research design
Conducting elements of quantitative or qualitative research (e.g., literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, report writing) using appropriate software, while further developing skills acquired through postgraduate studies or recent experience
Collaborating within teams to ensure the successful completion of projects
Keeping abreast of the educational assessment landscape and pertinent literature
Adhering to AQA's policies and procedures, particularly concerning Ethics and Data Protection
Contributing to research impact and engagement through report writing and other dissemination methods, gradually establishing a public presence in the assessment research community that supports AQA's reputation in educational assessment
Assisting in the continuous improvement of the team's research and development practices, fostering a positive team culture.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates should possess an undergraduate degree and a Master's degree (or be nearing completion) in psychology or education (other disciplines may also be considered), ideally with statistical training.

Alternatively, an equivalent professional qualification or relevant experience is acceptable.
Familiarity with and developing practice in postgraduate-level qualitative or quantitative research methods for the social sciences
Proven ability to communicate research findings effectively to diverse stakeholders in various formats (both written and verbal)
Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

A methodical approach with exceptional attention to detail is essential, along with the ability to comprehend and synthesize complex, diverse, and incomplete information, and to articulate well-reasoned arguments.
Strong interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders are necessary.
The ability to manage tasks efficiently and meet deadlines is crucial.

Preferred Qualifications:

Some experience in contributing to applied research within an academic or commercial context is desirable.

Familiarity with principles of educational or psychological assessment (e.g., validity and reliability) is a plus.
Knowledge of educational testing and test development principles (e.g., classical test theory, item response theory, psychometrics) is also advantageous.
