Job Title: Locum Specialist Doctor in Adult Psychiatry

Job Summary:

Medical Solutions is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Locum Specialist Doctor in Adult Psychiatry to join our mental health team. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive psychiatric care to adult patients, working within a multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high-quality mental health services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of adults with a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders, psychosis, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders.
  • Conduct detailed psychiatric assessments, including mental state examinations, risk assessments, and the development of individualized care plans.
  • Manage acute and chronic psychiatric cases, providing both inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, ensuring safe prescribing practices and monitoring of treatment efficacy and side effects.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in ward rounds, case discussions, care planning meetings, and risk management reviews.
  • Provide psychiatric input in the management of complex cases, including crisis intervention and liaising with other medical specialties when necessary.
  • Engage in Mental Health Act assessments, tribunals, and other legal processes as required.
  • Ensure that all clinical documentation is accurate, comprehensive, and completed in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, providing emergency psychiatric cover as required.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities within the department.
  • Provide support, supervision, and training to junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.

Essential Qualifications:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice.
  • Section 12 Approval under the Mental Health Act or eligibility to obtain it.
  • Completion of at least four years of postgraduate training (two of which should be in a relevant specialty).
  • Extensive experience in adult psychiatry, including inpatient and community settings.

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong clinical expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of adult psychiatric disorders.
  • Experience in risk assessment, crisis intervention, and managing complex psychiatric presentations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven ability to manage psychiatric emergencies and provide on-call cover when required.
  • Understanding of mental health legislation, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement.
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring, and supervising junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent international qualification.
  • Experience in research, audit, and contributions to the development of clinical guidelines.
  • Training or experience in a subspecialty area, such as addiction psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, or liaison psychiatry.
