Anglican Chaplain Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Anglican Chaplain to join our team at HMP Thameside. As a key member of our chaplaincy team, you will provide spiritual care and support to prisoners, staff, and their families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance to prisoners, staff, and their families.
  • Facilitate worship, meditation, and other spiritual activities.
  • Contribute to the development of local policy and procedures.
  • Provide mentoring and support to other chaplains and volunteers.
  • Plan and lead worship and other spiritual events.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support as needed.
  • Facilitate services provided by contractors and volunteers.
  • Acquire and distribute religious literature and materials.
  • Participate in Faith Awareness Training for staff.
  • Take responsibility for your own spiritual health and development.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years' experience in delivering Anglican services and activities in a custodial environment.
  • Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively in a multi-faith chaplaincy.
  • Ability to meet the faith/belief eligibility requirements for the Anglican faith.
  • Reader (Canon E4 of The Canons of the Church of England or direct equivalent in other Anglican provinces).
  • Religious sister or brother, Church Army Evangelist, or other appropriately qualified or licensed minister in the Anglican tradition.
  • Formal endorsement from the HMPPS Anglican Faith Adviser confirming eligibility and suitability.
  • Diocesan DBS clearance and up to date safeguarding training.
  • Formal recognised qualification in theology or religious study.
  • Relevant practical experience in delivery of worship, group work, and pastoral care.
