Job Title: Mental Health Practitioner

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mental Health Practitioner to join our team at South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to improving the recovery outcomes of individuals and will enjoy working with stakeholders to support service transformation and innovation.

The post holder will be a specialist worker who will operate within mental health and commissioned substance misuse services across the Trust footprint. They will work as a practitioner providing expert, evidence-based practice to people with co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drugs needs and offer clinical input to the community Mental Health Teams and to external colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide specialist clinical input and advice to support colleagues within the SWLSTG/Bridge Support community rehabilitation project and to agencies concerned with co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drug problems.
  • Undertake time-limited treatment specific work with clients whose care is co-ordinated by other members of staff in clinical teams, in respect of substance use, relapse prevention, detoxification and rehabilitation referrals for those with co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drugs and mental health need.
  • Develop skills and abilities with adult community mental health team staff and the substance misuse team, which enable them to work more effectively with clients who present with co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drug problems.
  • Provide clinical supervision formally and informally to staff of all disciplines (e.g. nurses, doctors, social workers) and grades (up to an including consultant level).
  • Provide harm reduction information, support and referral with an emphasis on safer drug and alcohol use, safer sex, tobacco harm reduction / smoking cessation, HIV, Hepatitis A,B and C and other blood borne infections.
  • Manage a caseload of service users affected drug and alcohol use and severe and enduring mental health needs, including service users with complex needs.
Requirements:
  • Degree or is able to demonstrate experience that equates working at degree level, in relevant clinical subject e.g. RMN, OT, Social Work.
  • Current professional registration in relevant clinical subject/practice e.g. RMN, OT, Social Work England.
  • Clinical Supervision training.
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
  • An appropriate professional qualification to supervise students in training. (e.g. ENB 998 or Practice Teacher Award).
  • A qualification in a relevant area of practice e.g.co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drugs and mental health need, cognitive behavioural therapy, Substance Misuse.
  • Membership of a professional interest group relating to specialist substance misuse or co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drug work.
Experience:
  • At least 4 years experience in a field of Mental Health, 2 years of which must be band 6 or equivalent.
  • Experience of working in a multi-professional team.
  • Understanding of the skills needed to supervise members of a multi-disciplinary team plus experience of supervising professional staff (this might include trainees).
  • Working with people with co -occurring mental health, alcohol & drug problems.
  • Experience of clinical risk assessment and management of vulnerable client groups.
  • Experience of working clinically and professionally with people who have a mental illness or substance use problems.
  • Experience of working with voluntary sector agency.
  • Experience of Racial Awareness/Diversity Training.
  • Experience of working in the NHS.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of current mental health and substance use policy, guidance and legislation.
  • Knowledge of the legal and ethical issues relating to health care.
  • Knowledge of the theoretical frameworks of care of service users presenting with co-occurring mental health, alcohol and/or drugs and mental health needs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of clinical governance, clinical audit and risk management.
  • Knowledge, (and the ability to apply it) of safe systems of work and the assessment of risk in regard to working with and visiting this user group.
  • Report writing and presentation skills.
