Job Title: Mental Health Practitioner

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mental Health Practitioner to join our team at South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to improving the recovery outcomes of individuals and enjoy working with stakeholders to support service transformation and innovation.

About the Role

The Mental Health Practitioner will work as a specialist worker providing expert, evidence-based practice to people with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drug needs. They will operate within mental health and commissioned substance misuse services across the Trust footprint, working closely with clinical teams and external colleagues to provide specialist assessment and interventions.

The post holder will develop skills and abilities with adult community mental health team staff and the substance misuse team, enabling them to work more effectively with clients who present with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drug problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist clinical input and advice to support colleagues within the SWLSTG/Bridge Support community rehabilitation project and to agencies concerned with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drug problems.
  • Undertake time-limited treatment specific work with clients whose care is coordinated by other members of staff in clinical teams, in respect of substance use, relapse prevention, detoxification, and rehabilitation referrals for those with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drugs and mental health need.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate care/treatment interventions for service users with complex needs associated with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drug issues.
  • Provide expert advice to clinical staff of all disciplines and grades on the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care/treatment packages for people with a co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drug problem.
  • Provide clinical supervision formally and informally to staff of all disciplines and grades.
  • Provide harm reduction information, support, and referral with an emphasis on safer drug and alcohol use, safer sex, tobacco harm reduction/smoking cessation, HIV, Hepatitis A, B, and C, and other blood-borne infections.
  • Manage a caseload of service users affected by drug and alcohol use and severe and enduring mental health needs.
Requirements
  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant clinical subject.
  • Current professional registration in a relevant clinical subject/practice.
  • Clinical Supervision training.
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
  • An appropriate professional qualification to supervise students in training.
  • Membership of a professional interest group relating to specialist substance misuse or co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drug work.
Experience
  • At least 4 years of experience in a field of Mental Health, 2 years of which must be band 6 or equivalent.
  • Experience of working in a multi-professional team.
  • Understanding of the skills needed to supervise members of a multi-disciplinary team plus experience of supervising professional staff.
  • Working with people with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and drug problems.
  • Experience of clinical risk assessment and management of vulnerable client groups.
  • Experience of working clinically and professionally with people who have a mental illness or substance use problems.
  • Experience of working with voluntary sector agencies.
  • Experience of Racial Awareness/Diversity Training.
  • Experience of working in the NHS.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of current mental health and substance use policy, guidance, and legislation.
  • Knowledge of the legal and ethical issues relating to healthcare.
  • Knowledge of the theoretical frameworks of care of service users presenting with co-occurring mental health, alcohol, and/or drugs and mental health needs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of clinical governance, clinical audit, and risk management.
  • Knowledge of safe systems of work and the assessment of risk in regard to working with and visiting this user group.
  • Report writing and presentation skills.
