Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to work with our cancer nursing service at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post is newly funded by Macmillan and will provide support to the upper GI cancer team.

Main Duties
  • Work closely with the dedicated Upper GI cancer /CUP multi-disciplinary teams within the Trust, actively involved in the diagnosis, investigations, treatment, and follow-up of patients with cancer, providing continuity of care and improving the quality of life for this patient group.
  • Support the band 7 CNS post-holder in their role as keyworker to patients in their caseload.
  • Deputise for the band 7 CNS post-holder in their absence.
  • Provide holistic assessment of needs and implementation of patient-centred care.
  • Work with other CNSs to facilitate health and wellbeing programmes.
  • Liaise with tertiary centres and their appropriate staff for patients undergoing investigations or treatment outside West Dorset.
  • Demonstrate a fundamental level of specialist knowledge of Upper GI cancer /CUP, and remain up-to-date with all relevant developments in these areas.
  • Be actively involved in palliative care and ongoing support of patients approaching the end of life.

The cancer services cover a number of pathways, and this post will make a huge difference to the service offered to our patients within the Upper GI and Cancer of Unknown Primary pathways.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
  • Act as deputy named keyworker to patients.
  • Develop and deliver individualised, specialised plans of care.
  • Provide advice and information for patients and their relatives/carers.
  • Ensure swift, efficient patient pathways. Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure cancer waiting times are met.
  • Communicate with patients to ensure they are kept up-to-date and informed as appropriate of their diagnosis and treatment plan.
Person SpecificationEducation, Qualifications, and TrainingEssential Criteria
  • Registered Nurse.
  • Three years post-registration experience.
Desirable Criteria
  • Post-registration qualifications relevant to the role.
  • Working towards a further degree.
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential Criteria
  • Knowledge of the management of patients with upper GI cancer.
  • Evidence of proven, ongoing professional development.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in working within upper GI/CUP cancer specialty.
  • Experience of the provision of care and support to patients with complex psychological/physiological needs.
