Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist

An exciting opportunity has arisen to take on a clinical specialist role within the forensic therapies service in the South West London & St George's Mental Health Trust. We have a large and supportive therapies team consisting of Occupational therapists, clinical exercise therapists, activity support workers and technical instructors. The postholder will take a leadership role in working with patients with learning disabilities, developing, and embedding sensory integration strategies into the broader Occupational therapy offering within the service.
Key Responsibilities:- To be responsible for the planning, development, and delivery of a specialist occupational therapy service focusing on sensory assessment/intervention/education and awareness for the service users within the forensic inpatient service.
- To support the therapies team to develop a greater consciousness of sensory practices, and support them to find ways to integrate sensory approaches into their work.
- To develop and maintain appropriate sensory spaces within the unit to meet the needs of the service users.
- To support the deputy head of therapies in providing professional leadership to colleagues within the forensic therapy team, modelling good practice.
- To support the delivery of OT packages for those with learning disabilities and/or sensory needs within the forensic services, working primarily on the LDA unit, though providing consultation to other forensic wards and the FIND team OT as required.
- To provide clinical supervision to Occupational therapists on the team, OT students on fieldwork placements, OT apprentices, and support staff.
- To take responsibility for oversight, efficient and effective management of the OT budget within the LD service.
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
- Masters degree in a subject relevant to clinical post or equivalence of knowledge and skills base attained through further training, short courses, relevant study.
- Registration to practice in the UK (HPC registered)
- Practice placement educators' course within one year of appointment
- Evidence of post-registration training or experience relevant to learning disabilities and mental health practice
- Highly developed interpersonal skills enabling therapeutic alliances to be developed & maintained with service users who have multiple & complex needs and with other organisations and providers, requiring influence and negotiation skills.
- Word processing, IT, and literature search skills
- Proficient standard of written communication skills
- Ability to promote & maintain the profile of OT within an MDT & the wider organisation
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, presenting ideas with clarity in a persuasive and influential style, for a variety of audiences.
- Day to day management of students, providing specialist training to healthcare professionals

- Experience of multi-professional collaboration at a senior level including partnership working with other statutory and voluntary organizations.
- Experience of supervision and appraisal and addressing performance issues.
- Experience of working in a range of mental health settings including with learning disabilities and/or forensic mental health.
- Post-graduate clinical experience highly related to clinical field.
- Experience of carrying a caseload of service users with complex and diverse needs in a mental health setting.
- Experience of maintaining a written record of continual professional development.
- Experience of writing specialist occupational therapy reports.
- Preparedness to work flexible hours through prior arrangement as the needs of the job dictate. (e.g. some evenings and weekends)
