Environmental Sustainability Director

We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Sustainability Director to join our SHEQ team in this pivotal role. You will lead the charge in advancing our Environmental Management and Sustainability initiatives, ensuring they align with and drive the Telecom SHEQ and Decarbonisation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure contracts and operational activities meet and exceed our Environmental Management System and legislative compliance requirements.
  2. Liaise with and report on relevant environmental, sustainability, and carbon capture KPIs and our progress against Divisional targets and objectives.
  3. Lead on, drive awareness, and deliver the requirements of the Environment and Carbon strategies within the division.
  4. Support on work winning and contract mobilisation where required.
  5. Represent Telecom contracts/projects in awards submissions, external communications, and industry events for environmental initiatives.
  6. Provide third-party assurance on the implementation of the Environmental Management System at contract/project level to meet the requirements of ISO 14001.
  7. Support operational teams with environmental guidance and advice and in the production of internal and external reports.
  8. Lead on VSI environmental incident investigations and support corrective actions where required.
  9. Liaise with regulators and other stakeholders to drive cross-contract improvements.
  10. Carry out internal and external audits of contracts, projects, and supply chain.
Competencies:
  1. At least 7 years' experience in the construction, utilities, or telecoms industry or relevant environmental experience in a similar sector.
  2. Experience of managing diverse teams of environmental specialists on construction projects across a multi-disciplined team.
Personal Qualities / Behaviours:
  1. Ability to organise workload effectively for the purpose of meeting deadlines.
  2. Ability to demonstrate flexibility/versatility combined with initiative, drive, and tenacity to deliver objectives.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with personnel at all levels of the organisation, creating engagement and support.
  4. Ability to work autonomously and flexibly, responding to business needs.
  5. Ability to challenge poor performance and approach difficult conversations in an appropriate and engaging manner.
Qualifications and Experience:
  1. Degree-level qualification in an appropriate environmental, carbon management, or related discipline (or equivalent).
  2. Practitioner or full membership with IEMA or working towards, or equivalent professional body grade.
  3. Up-to-date CPD (evidence to be provided).
  4. Management/leadership qualification.
  5. Project management qualification would be advantageous.
  6. Experience of maintaining or reaching externally audited management standards, including ISO 14001, along with but not limited to Achilles, Carbon Reduce, etc.
  7. Recent proven experience of working in a senior environment/sustainability position.
