The successful candidate will play a key role in managing and overseeing planning projects, with a particular focus on biodiversity conservation and enhancement. This position requires a deep understanding of biodiversity legislation, policies, and best practices, as well as proven experience in liaising with government bodies such as DEFRA, Natural England, and Local Planning Authorities.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ecological principles and methodologies, including habitat assessment, species surveys, and ecological impact assessment. They will also have experience in engaging with government bodies and establishing positive relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Lead and manage planning projects with a specific focus on achieving Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Conduct assessments, surveys, and impact evaluations to inform planning decisions and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and implement Biodiversity Net Gain strategies and action plans in accordance with relevant legislation, metrics, policies, and guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with Local Planning Authorities, conservation organizations, Wildlife Trusts, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, and developments in biodiversity conservation and planning policy to inform decision-making and best practices.
  • Prepare and present reports, including Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans and Biodiversity Gain Plans, presentations, and proposals to clients, regulatory bodies, and community groups as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Planning, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental planning.
  • In-depth knowledge of biodiversity legislation, policies, and guidelines, including relevant national and local planning policies.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing planning projects with a focus on biodiversity, including experience in preparing and implementing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) plans.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess and mitigate biodiversity impacts within the planning context.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools used in planning and biodiversity assessment, such as the Statutory Metric, GIS, ecological modeling software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
