About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Ecological Specialist to join our London sustainability team. This exciting new role will see you lead on projects across the South region, working closely with our existing ecologist in the North.

The London studio is our largest studio, featuring a multi-discipline community of architects, engineers, designers, and urbanists. The studio has a stimulating range of work, including education, healthcare, science and research, retail, workplace, heritage, and urbanism projects.

This role will be pivotal in raising BDP's profile as a leader in ecology and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), delivering commercially balanced, innovative and integrated solutions to our diverse range of projects.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Plan and undertake ecological assessments, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, UK Habitat Assessments, and protected species surveys.
  2. Work with the Statutory Biodiversity Metric Calculation Tool, producing Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans, and completing Biodiversity Gain Plans.
  3. Liaise with other disciplines, including sustainability, acoustics, lighting, etc.
  4. Author technical reports required for projects, including planning submissions and planning condition discharge.
  5. Manage sub-consultants, organize surveys, and review their reports.
  6. Participate in knowledge-share sessions with the team, ensuring continuous improvement of industry knowledge and integrating this across projects.
About You

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • A formal qualification in ecology or a directly related subject.
  • A full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (or associate member working towards full membership).
  • Holding at least a Level 1 Class License for bat surveys, with other survey licenses welcomed.
  • Knowledge of UK environmental policy and legislation, relevant wildlife legislation, and ecological survey methodologies.
  • Experience in contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain calculations and/or reporting.
  • Exemplary written and spoken English, with experience of technical report writing.
