Job Overview

As a Functional Skills Tutor at HMP Peterborough, you will play a vital role in helping prisoners achieve their functional skills qualification in English. This is a challenging yet rewarding role that requires a flexible and responsive attitude, as well as a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of individuals within the criminal justice system.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate activities and courses to help prisoners achieve their functional skills qualification in English.
  • Monitor the attendance, achievement, and progression of learning, while challenging any negative behaviors and increasing prisoners' self-esteem through a self-directed learning/teaching style.
  • Work with prisoners who may have undiagnosed learning difficulties and neurodivergence, and provide support to help them regain their confidence in education.
  • Enjoy year-round education without the constraints of term-based schedules, providing the flexibility to take leave throughout the year.
  • Work with smaller class sizes, typically ranging from 6 to 12 students, allowing for a learner-centric approach and customized teaching methods.

Requirements:

  • Working towards or achieved a teaching qualification in the relevant subject area OR experience in a teaching/tutor role.
  • Interest in the rehabilitation of offenders.
  • A flexible and responsive attitude.
  • Willingness to innovate and demonstrate self-motivation.
  • Be proactive, dynamic, and positive at all times.
