Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Key Engineer to lead the development of special purpose machinery from concept phase to commissioning. The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing our sustainable fibre processing technology from pilot to mass production, considering control, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic aspects.

This highly autonomous role requires hands-on engineering skills with fundamental knowledge to solve existing and new process equipment challenges. You will report directly to the COO and be responsible for delivering material production equipment and R&D test rigs. Additionally, you will liaise with equipment vendors, set equipment specifications, and research partners to identify and implement specific equipment for process improvements.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties
  • Develop ideas from concept phase to physical implementation, including mechanical and electrical CAD design, produce technical documentation, quotation management, inspection, assembly of received parts, and commissioning.
  • Select and integrate various components, and lead equipment specification work internally and externally with suppliers.
  • Create detailed equipment specification documents using appropriate technical language.
  • Allocate, track, and manage work package delivery within budget and agreed timescales.
  • Continuously develop best practices and help implement solutions with the existing team to increase production rates, drive up efficiency, reduce manufacturing cost, increase product quality, and ensure equipment uptime.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • A relevant BSc/BEng degree or above in science or engineering.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years' experience in designing and building special purpose machinery.
  • Proven knowledge in special purpose machinery development, preferably with an understanding of implementing industrial-scale process solutions.
  • Previous experience working with Mechanical & Electrical CAD packages and familiarity with PLC programming is essential.
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills, must be a team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Exposure to an R&D environment, with experience of taking process ideas from concept to implementation.
  • Demonstrated history of flexibility, self-motivation, and willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with applicable engineering standards, SOPs, H&S regulations, and the CE/UKCA marking process.
Salary Range

The estimated salary for this position is between £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience.
