Position Overview

Are you ready to contribute to a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the health of our community? We are seeking two passionate and skilled Senior Vascular Surgeons to become integral members of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board's North Wales Vascular Network.

The primary facility for advanced arterial surgery is situated at Glan Clwyd Hospital. As part of this initiative, we have equipped a cutting-edge Hybrid Theatre along with a modern interventional radiology suite. The Health Board has committed resources to assemble a team of consultant surgeons, interventional radiologists, mid-level physicians, specialized nursing personnel, and a dedicated vascular ward.

The North Wales Vascular Network caters to a population of around 700,000 residents, with additional services provided at various spoke locations.

These positions represent a blend of replacement and expansion roles, driven by our objective to enhance surgical service availability at our spoke sites and to optimize on-call frequency.

The selected candidates will participate in a rota system, serving as Vascular Consultant of the Week (VCOW) and will have a dedicated vascular middle-grade on-call overnight.

Key Responsibilities

All consultants will be strategically scheduled to deliver consistent services at the arterial hub and one spoke site, which includes mandatory attendance at the weekly multidisciplinary team meeting. The VCOW duties will be organized on a prospective cover basis, allowing for flexibility among colleagues. Other responsibilities will be planned on a non-prospective cover basis.

Collaborating with our existing team of Vascular Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists, along with a dedicated group of medical and nursing staff, the successful appointee will deliver a high-quality, contemporary service in a rapidly evolving environment. The roles will be based at Glan Clwyd Hospital and will also support our spoke sites.

Candidates are expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance from Glan Clwyd Hospital for on-call duties, although on-site accommodation is available for those who prefer to live further away.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP)
  • FRCS (Vascular) or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant higher Vascular surgical qualification

Desirable Criteria

  • CCT Holder
  • MD or other advanced degree

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • Comprehensive training in Vascular Surgery
  • Extensive experience in Vascular surgery
  • Experience in managing vascular trauma

Desirable

  • Fellowship in Vascular Surgery
  • Experience in EVAR procedures

Personal Attributes

Essential

  • Strong commitment to teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Excellent communication and counseling skills
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current practices in Vascular Surgery

Desirable

  • Proficiency in computing skills

Research and Audit

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding its role in enhancing medical practice
