Senior Vascular Surgery Consultant

Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire, United Kingdom Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board Full time

Position Overview

Are you interested in contributing to a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the health outcomes of our community? We are seeking two passionate and skilled Senior Vascular Surgeons to become part of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board's North Wales Vascular Network.

The primary facility for advanced arterial surgery is situated at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire. As a vital component of this initiative, we have established a cutting-edge Hybrid Theatre alongside a new interventional radiology suite at Glan Clwyd Hospital. The Health Board has committed resources to build a team of consultant surgeons, interventional radiologists, mid-level doctors, specialized nursing personnel, and a dedicated vascular ward.

The North Wales Vascular Network serves a population of around 700,000 residents, with additional services available at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

These positions represent a blend of replacement and expansion roles, partly due to the intention to enhance surgical services at our spoke locations and to decrease on-call frequency from 1:8 to 1:9.

The successful candidates will participate in a rota that includes 1 week in 9 as the Vascular Consultant of the Week (VCOW) and 1 night in 9 on call, supported by a dedicated vascular middle-grade on-call overnight.

Key Responsibilities

All consultants will be strategically scheduled to provide consistent service at the arterial hub site at Glan Clwyd and one spoke site, either Wrexham Maelor Hospital or Ysbyty Gwynedd. This includes mandatory attendance at the main weekly MDT, currently held on Friday afternoons at Glan Clwyd, and fulfilling VCOW duties as per the established schedule. If a successful candidate is offered sessions in interventional radiology procedures, these will occur at Glan Clwyd during their VCOW week, which is planned on a prospective cover basis. Consultants wishing to be absent from VCOW duties will be expected to coordinate swaps with colleagues. All other responsibilities are scheduled on a non-prospective cover basis.

In collaboration with our existing Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, and a dedicated team of medical and nursing staff, the successful appointee will deliver a high-quality, contemporary service in a rapidly evolving unit. The roles will be based at Glan Clwyd Hospital and will extend services to our spoke sites at Wrexham Maelor Hospital or Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

Candidates will be expected to reside within a 30-minute travel radius of Glan Clwyd Hospital when on call; however, on-site overnight accommodation is available for those who choose to live further away. This arrangement allows for the possibility of consultants residing in various areas of the Health Board or in regions of North West England within a reasonable commuting distance.
