Industrial Placement Opportunity

Join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and contribute to the development of critical technology for European Space Agency (ESA) flight missions. As a Cryogenic Engineer, you will work on designing and developing innovative cryocooler systems, including the 29K-JT active cryocooler system for the Ariel mission and the Small Scale Cooler for low-cost space missions.
This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, working on projects that have the potential to impact both scientific and commercial applications. About the RoleAs a Cryogenic Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Designing and developing mechanical components for cryocooler systems
- Planning, running, and documenting experiments and projects
- Collaborating with other teams and projects to achieve common goals
You will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects, from designing concept mechanical components to developing robust and accurate manufacturing data or laboratory experiments. Your strong theoretical predictions and ability to apply your academic knowledge will be essential in delivering fit-for-purpose concepts and designs.
RequirementsTo be successful in this role, you will need:
- Currently be enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025
- First year results demonstrate high grades in lab/project work
- First year results are strong in general theory/maths
- Able to communicate clear complex thoughts in both spoken and written forms
- Interested in applied research/design
