Industrial Placement Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire.
This is a fixed-term placement opportunity for 12 months, commencing in summer 2025. The successful candidate will work on the development of detectors for particle physics experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and neutrino detectors in the USA and Japan.
Key Responsibilities- Write and run simulations using standard particle physics frameworks and finite element analysis to understand the behavior of the magnetic horn, a key focusing device for the neutrino beam.
- Collaborate with the STFC Particle Physics Department to develop and implement new technologies and methods for detector development.
- Contribute to the design, development, and testing of detector components and systems.
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement.
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year.
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025.
- Interest in particle physics and simulation.
- Programming experience.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis methods.
- Experience with Ansys or similar Finite Element Analysis software.
