Clinical Technologist Job Description

Job Title: Clinical Technologist

Band: 5

Hours of Duty: 37.5 hours per week

Annual Leave: 27 days per annum, 29 days after 5 years NHS service, 33 days after 10 years NHS service

Department: Medical Physics Department

Accountable to: Director of Surgery and Cancer ICSU, Director of Operations Surgery and Cancer ICSU, Head of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering, Chief Technician

Main Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain medical devices in the Community and all SLAs with Whittington Health.
  2. Work at sites within the Whittington Health NHS Trust and other SLA sites.
  3. Work in accordance with management systems and processes introduced by Medical Physics Management.
  4. Adhere to all Trust and department policies and procedure.
  5. Provide technical skills and knowledge in analysing complex faults on a range of medical equipment.
  6. Liaise with manufacturers/service agents on complex technical issues relating to the repairs of medical equipment.
  7. Appraise the most cost-effective repair option.
  8. Use a range of specialised precision calibration and test equipment.
  9. Ensure that medical devices are decontaminated prior to working on them.
  10. Undertake planned preventative maintenance and safe repair of expensive complex medical equipment.
  11. Undertake commissioning/acceptance testing of new and loan medical equipment.
  12. Draft Minutes of meetings, both internally and externally, to the department as required.
  13. Calibrate and safety test all medical equipment prior to issue to clinical areas.
  14. Update details on the computerised equipment management system relating to any work allocated to them.
  15. Comply with the procedures/work instructions under the Quality Management System.
  16. Remove/condemn medical equipment when it is unsafe or beyond economical repair.
  17. Report Adverse Incident Reports in accordance with the MHRA's guidance.
  18. Stand in and understand the Equipment Library procedures.
  19. Order medical device spare parts using the Trust's ordering system.
  20. Develop planned preventative maintenance schedules/work instructions for the medical equipment supported by the team.
  21. Attend external off-site service/repair requests.
  22. Undertake suppliers and other external training provider's courses to enable competency.
  23. Participate in a scheme of continuing professional development.
  24. Be subject to an annual appraisal.
  25. Develop skills to use a wide range of test and measurement equipment.
  26. Be responsible for establishing effective communication with the customer and suppliers.
  27. Ensure the accurate recording of maintenance undertaken on the equipment management database.
  28. Plan and prioritise their own workload that has been allocated by the Medical Physics Team Leader.
  29. Support/assist in equipment library activities.
  30. Travel between Whittington Health NHS Trust sites.
  31. Carry out activities out of remit occasionally, supervised or unsupervised.
  32. Attend departmental meetings.
  33. Carry out any other tasks relevant to their job role.
